The Queen’s Birthday, which is celebrated in most states on Monday, June 11, makes for a perfect long weekend. Because Australia is part of the British Commonwealth, it commemorates the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II every year. All states and territories celebrate the Queen’s birthday in June, except for Western Australia (September) and Queensland (October). But regardless of where you’re studying, there’s plenty to do across the weekend.


Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N (all weekend)

If you’re a diehard Marvel fan, the Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N is the perfect place to spend the long weekend. Check out some of your favourite Marvel equipment, such as Captain America’s shield, Iron Man’s suit, and Thor’s hammer, and then head next door to the exhibit’s own New York-style eatery, Midtown Diner.

Oz Comic-Con (June 9 & 10)

Oz Comic-Con is a huge convention for anyone who loves pop culture. Spend the day browsing the stalls, visiting panels, and getting autographs from some of the biggest stars in film and TV — including KJ Apa from Riverdale. You can even take part in cosplay as some of your favourite characters!


Vivid Sydney (all weekend)

The NSW capital comes alive in June during Vivid Sydney, an incredible city-wide lights festival. Buildings all over Sydney are lit up in neon lights, and dazzling artworks are projected onto the faces of some pretty famous buildings. You can see the Sydney Opera House transformed into a moving piece of art, play in a light-filled enchanted garden, or check out 1000 illuminated cranes in The Rocks.

Sydney Film Festival (all weekend)

Make sure you head along to see some of the best international and Australian films this winter at the Sydney Film Festival. You can catch one of the award-winning films at theatres around town, such as the State Theatre, or visit the Festival Hub at Sydney Town Hall to experience some incredible VR installations.


Summer Session (June 9)

Head down to Mindil Beach for 2018’s Summer Session, the largest music festival in the Northern Territory. The festival brings you the best electronic music to dance to at sunset, with sets from both international and local DJs.

Markets (June 9 & 10)

Spend your weekend browsing the wonderful Parap and Mindil markets. Visit the Parap Village Markets on Saturday morning for some fresh produce, and the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets on Sunday evening to check out the arts and crafts.


Adelaide Cabaret Festival (all weekend)

Adelaide’s Cabaret Festival fills the city with music, dancing, and fun. Check out the bands littered around the city, such as the Modern Māori Quartet, or The Cat Empire. Or, visit one of Adelaide’s theatres to enjoy skits by local comedians.

Gosh! Splendour In The Grass Indie Party (June 9)

Spend Saturday night listening to some of your favourite indie bands at Gosh! Located at Jive right in the heart of Adelaide, you can dance the night away to bands such as MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Franz Ferdinand and much more.


Dark Mofo (all weekend)

MONA’s very own winter festival, Dark Mofo, encourages you to embrace your dark side through some pretty unique art and music experiences. Check out the art installations all over Hobart, listen to electronic jazz at MONA, or attend a spooky costume party at the historic Hadley’s Orient Hotel. There’s plenty to see and do.


Hobart has the most spectacular markets in Tasmania. Check out the fresh food at the Farm Gate Market on Bathurst Street, or swing by Hobart’s famous Salamanca Market for local products, arts and crafts.


Snowy Mountains

Just a 2.5-hour drive from Canberra is the Snowy Mountains, Australia’s tallest peaks. The snow season officially opens on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, making it the perfect time to plan a weekend away, or even just a day trip. Spend your time skiing, snowboarding or hiking on these beautiful mountains.

Peak Music Festival (June 8 – 10)

If you’re heading to the Snowy Mountains, why not enjoy some music while you’re there? Perisher Ski Resort’s Peak Music Festival has over 35 artists playing across four days, so you can listen to both Australian and international music while you enjoy the snow.


Sweet Saturdays (June 9)

Head to The Sewing Room in Perth for live music, a warm atmosphere, and free lolly bags. It’s the perfect night out for sweet tooths who want to keep warm in winter!

Witches and Wizards (June 10)

Harry Potter-lovers will adore this magical night out at Witches and Wizards, where you can listen to the Fremantle Orchestra play the magical music of the Harry Potter movies. For extra fun, dress up as your favourite magical character and enjoy afternoon tea with the orchestra.


Sunday Sessions on the Green (June 10)

Spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon at the River Quay Green in Brisbane. You can listen to live music, lounge on the grass, or play a game of lawn bowls with friends.
