Seeing as Perth is Australia’s sunniest capital city, it’s not too surprising that there’s a lot of focus on an outdoors lifestyle. As such there are many picturesque camping and caravan sites to help you make the most of it. And then there are the white-sand beaches, which stretch almost the whole length of the coast. They’re known as some of the most beautiful in the world, and with over 12,000 km of beach, there’s a lot of it, too!
Cottesloe
Just a 15-minute drive from the city, Cottesloe is the most popular beach in the whole of Western Australia. It’s ideal for swimming, surfing, snorkelling and having a few cold ones while watching the sunset. There are also ‘Sunday sessions’ held in a few venues along the beach. There are stylish restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars along the strip.
National Parks
And from sandy beaches to lush greenery, you’ve got Avon Valley National Park, which is just an hour’s drive north from Perth city. It’s a 43.66 km squared park named after the Avon River, which flows through it. There are white water rapids, hikes up to calm pools and bush walks. It’s a popular park for camping and caravans, and there are numerous campsites throughout.
Botanic Gardens
But you can also get some fresh air and leafy goodness in the city in one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, Kings Park and Botanic Garden. This mammoth park comprises 400 hectares of natural bushland and sculpted gardens. Due to its elevated position on the crest of Mount Eliza, you also get some pretty spectacular views of the city and Swan River.
Wineries
Western Australia is a well-known wine region, and a visit to Perth wouldn’t be complete without a trip out to a winery, if you like wine, that is. Swan Valley and Perth Hills are very pretty regions where you can enjoy a great scenic view as you sip away on some homegrown vino. You’ll find both boutique family vineyards as well as more well-known brands.
Fremantle
Travel just 25 minutes down to the port city of Fremantle for another great day-trip to a place where historic maritime history and modern architecture coexist with ease. Get immersed in the rich historical side of Fremantle on the famous heritage trail. There’s so much on offer: there’s the Western Maritime Museum, World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison and the Roundhouse, which is Western Australia’s oldest public building. There’s also some classic colonial architecture and heritage pubs. They’ve really got their historical stuff down in Fremantle.
