University rankings can be an incredibly influential deciding factor when it comes to choosing the perfect place to study. The annual Times Higher Education 2021 rankings have just been released, and a record number of Australian institutions have ranked among the top 200 best universities in the world.
The methodology that makes up the Times Higher Education rankings is considered one of the most comprehensive, establishing the record-breaking 12 Australian universities as frontrunners in teaching, research influence, international outlook and knowledge transfer. Nine of these 12 universities have improved their positions considerably, with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) showing the most growth, jumping 34 places. Macquarie University in Sydney has also joined the top 200 for the first time.
The University of Melbourne remains Australia’s highest-ranked university at 31st on the list and is considered one of the country’s most influential institutions. All of Australia’s Group of Eight universities (a coalition of world-leading, research-intensive universities) appear in the top 200. But, a lot of the country’s success came from newer universities, through their academics and international research projects.
