Breaking News: Australia’s Minimum Wage Will Increase in 2022

The Fair Work Commission has announced today that the national minimum wage in Australia will increase by 5.2 per cent (which equates to an extra $40 per week for millions of workers).

Since 2021, the minimum wage in Australia has been $20.33 per hour (or $772.60 per week). However, given that Australia’s cost of living has been spiking in recent months, many groups have called for an increase to help people manage their expenses. As a result, the minimum wage will now sit at $21.38 (or $812.60 per week).

Casual employees receiving minimum wage will also continue to receive at least a 25 per cent casual loading.

When will the change come into effect?

Award rates in the following sectors will not need to implement the new increase until 1 October 2022 due to “exceptional circumstances”:

  • Aviation
  • Tourism
  • Hospitality

All other industries with modern award rates must implement the change from 1 July 2022.
