How to Create the Perfect Study Space

When it comes to studying for success, the secret lies in three words: location, location, location! Creating the perfect study desk setup is vital to ensuring you’re as focused, calm and productive as possible – three things you definitely want to be, especially during exam season. So, what does it take to create the perfect at-home study space? Here’s your go-to checklist.

Why does your study space matter?

Creating a peaceful and productive environment is one of the simplest yet most effective study hacks. When you set up this space in the right way, you’ll feel more focused and centred when you’re in it, thereby helping you manage your time and study for success. Having a designated study space (i.e. a space that is for studying and only studying) is great as well because it allows you to better establish boundaries between your studies and other aspects of your life. This is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

A quiet spot

The first step in creating your ideal study desk setup is to choose the right location for it. As a student, you may not have many options, particularly if you’re living in student accommodation or a sharehouse. To the best of your ability, aim for a spot that is quiet and free from distractions (such as chatty housemates or street noise).

Computer and keyboard

Make sure your computer and keyboard are positioned arm’s length away from you. You’ll also want to get a stand for your laptop, so it’s at your eye level. That way, you won’t have to crouch down to see your screen. With these tools, you’ll better maintain your focus – and your posture!

A computer mouse

You’re going to be spending long hours at your computer, so you want to make sure your study desk setup is as comfortable and efficient as possible. A great tool to make that goal a reality is a wireless computer mouse. With this handy gadget, you’ll perform tasks much quicker, easier and more comfortably than you would by using your laptop’s trackpad.

A light source

Let there be light! We highly recommend adding a table lamp to your desk to ensure it’s well-lit. Not having a strong light source can lead you to squint and strain your eyes while working/studying, potentially causing negative side effects, such as headaches and migraines.

To avoid these, be sure to invest in a desk/table lamp (hint: you can find affordable and stylish options at shops like Kmart, Target and IKEA).

Writing materials

Always keep a notepad and some pens either directly on your desk or in a nearby study cabinet. Whether you’re listening to a lecture, brainstorming ideas for a new project or writing a practice exam, you’ll almost certainly need to write things down at some point – especially if you’re a reading/writing learner. Snacks and water

Keep some healthy snacks and a bottle of water on your desk. By staying fed and hydrated, you’ll improve your brain function, concentration and memory. We recommend nutritious foods like fresh fruit, muesli bars and nuts.

Tokens of your personality

Your desk should reflect who you are. Be sure to add some fun photos of you and your mates, some fun art prints, and maybe even a memento or two from your home country.

Another great addition to any at-home study desk? Some fresh greenery! Having a desk setup with plants is an awesome way to brighten up your space and add some colour. So, take this as your sign to head to your local plant nursery and embrace your inner green thumb.
