The Australian Government is launching an important initiative: the Multicultural Framework Review (the Review). Guided by a panel of prominent Australians, the Review is intended to gather vital insights and experiences relating to multiculturalism in Australia.
As an international student, you have a unique perspective on multiculturalism in Australia, and your voice is crucial to the success of the Review.
Cultural diversity in Australia
Australia’s cultural diversity is something truly special, and international students are a big part of that. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in August 2021, over 7 million people in Australia were born overseas, representing 27.6% of the population. In all, Australians come from over 200 birthplaces – that’s a lot of unique stories, experiences and perspectives adding to our multicultural tapestry!
However, even with this rich diversity, there’s still work to be done. It’s one thing to have a multicultural society; it’s another to ensure that everyone feels equally included and represented. That’s where the Review comes in.
What are the goals of the Review?
In a nutshell, the Review is all about ensuring Australia continues to be a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive place for everyone. It will involve examining the rules, programs and structures we’ve got in place to support our mix of cultures. It also aims to uncover any hurdles that might be preventing the social and economic inclusion of all cultures, as well as celebrating diversity and finding new ways to benefit from it.
And that’s why your unique perspective as an international student is invaluable.
How can you contribute?
Everyone’s perspective matters in this endeavour, from organisations to individuals. Submissions are now open from 24 July to 29 September 2023. This is a unique opportunity to share your experiences, ideas and suggestions on how Australia can better support its multicultural society. Participating is easy. You can make submissions in your preferred language and in any format – be it written, audio, or video.
