If you’re studying education and/or hoping to work as a teacher in NSW after your studies, we’ve got great news. In a historic moment, the NSW Government has secured a deal that will increase teacher salaries in the state by roughly $10,000. This is the biggest increase NSW teachers have seen in compensation since the 1990s.
The agreement means starting salaries will increase from $75,791 to $85,000, and the maximum salaries for teachers will increase from $113,042 to $122,100 from 9 October 2023. This will make NSW teachers the highest paid in the nation until ACT teachers receive their next pay rise in June 2024.
Currently, NSW is home to roughly 95,000 teachers but is in extreme need of more educators to fill skills shortages.
Teaching professionals of various kinds have long been in high demand across the country – and according to the National Skills Commission, they still are. Examples of roles experiencing skills shortages include:
- Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teachers
- Primary School Teachers
- Secondary School Teachers
- Special Needs Teachers
Teaching professionals are in such high demand that the Australian Government is prioritising skilled migration applicants in these roles for processing. At the end of 2022, many skilled visa applicants working in education were receiving decisions within a single day.
Speaking to ABC News, NSW Teachers Federation Deputy President Henry Rajendra said that he was confident the pay rise would help to attract more professionals and combat the teacher shortage.
“This is an agreement that will save the profession,” he said.
