Adelaide’s city centre is a masterclass in urban planning, known for its distinctive grid layout. The grid is divided into a ‘one square mile’ (actually, it’s about 1.67 square miles or 4.33 square km…) area, bordered by wide streets and surrounded by the lush Adelaide Parklands. The grid is walkable and easy to navigate, with Victoria Square/Tartanyangga at its heart, a central hub for activities and events.
The city’s efficient tram and railway systems make commuting a breeze, connecting you effortlessly to various parts of Adelaide, including the recently established Flinders City Campus. There are so many exciting new developments happening within the Adelaide city grid, so keep your eyes peeled!
The festival scene
South Australia isn’t called the Festival State for nothing! From theatre to dance, sport, music and comedy, there’s a party on your doorstep (almost – sometimes you’ll need a break!) every night.
The summer months are jam-packed with festival fun. Watch a local Aussie comedian, a spicy cabaret or a mysterious magician at the Adelaide Fringe Festival – the biggest arts festival in Australia. Enjoy the Moon Lantern Festival and Lucky Dumpling Market at OzAsia Festival, or dance to the international beats on offer at WOMADelaide.
And the festivals don’t stop in winter! If you’re a foodie, try out Tasting Australia, where you can take a cooking class with a celebrity chef, or enjoy a long lunch at an iconic Adelaide location. The cooler months also bring Illuminate Adelaide, featuring the stunning City Lights installation along North Terrace. While you’re there, drop by the Flinders City Campus and Festival Plaza to see the spectacular displays and immerse yourself in the creative energy.
The music scene
Did you know Adelaide is the first (and only!) designated UNESCO City of Music in Australia? With over 100 live music venues in the city, your new favourite band might be performing just around the corner.
Home to famous musicians and bands including Sia, the Hilltop Hoods and Cold Chisel, Adelaide is a thriving hub for upcoming and established artists. Why not get your friends together and start a band of your own?
The wine regions
South Australian wine is famous around the world – now you can experience where and how it’s made!
The Barossa Valley, located just an hour’s drive from the city, is one of the world’s great wine regions, known for its bold shiraz and home to some of the oldest grapevines in the world. Learn how to make your own wine at Penfolds, take a cooking class at Maggie Beer’s farm, or head up high over the region in a hot air balloon.
Progressive politics
South Australia is well known for its progressive approach to politics. Former Premier Don Dunstan was at the forefront of many of these decisions, including introducing the first anti-discrimination and land rights laws in Australia.
Film and television
From action-packed Mortal Kombat to spooky horror Talk to Me, Adelaide is becoming the place to be for filmmakers from across the world. Adelaidian actors are seeing great success in Hollywood too, with Sarah Snook winning an Emmy for her role in Succession and Kodi-Smit McPhee gaining an Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog.
And it’s not just acting and directing – Adelaide studios have provided the special effects for all your favourite blockbusters, including Elvis, Ford v Ferrari and Thor: Ragnarok.

Adelaide Central Market
Established in 1869, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere!
Over 70 traders call the market home, and you can find cheesemakers, bakeries, fishmongers and greengrocers among many, many more. It’s also a multicultural hub, with shops and restaurants offering cuisine from around the world, from Sunmi’s Sushi, owned by former Olympic volleyballer Sunmi, to the Old Lolly Shop, in operation since 1906 – longer than any other stall in the market.
