10 Aussie Icons to Dress up as This Halloween

Looking for classic Australian Halloween costume ideas? Well, look no further, we’ve got you covered! From the iconic to the funny and slightly silly, there’s no shortage of iconic Aussies for you to imitate at your Halloween party this year.

Kath and Kel – Kath & Kim

Want to match with a mate? This iconic Australian duo from one of the country’s most famous TV comedies is perfect for anyone ready to have some fun.

To dress as Kath, you’ll need a colourful tracksuit, chunky white sneakers, and a curly blonde wig. Kel’s look is all about the short-sleeved button-up shirt (tucked in, of course), leather jacket, dad jeans and a bumbag. Practise your speed walk, and you’re ready to go!

Steve Irwin

You can’t get more iconic than one of Australia’s most loveable heroes, the late Steve Irwin. His signature khaki outfit is super simple to put together and easy to recognise. All you need is a khaki button-up shirt, khaki shorts and hiking boots. Carry around a plush crocodile or snake to complete the look!

Raygun

The whole world watched her unique breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics this year, and now you can bring your best Raygun-inspired moves to the Halloween party. Grab a green polo top, green track pants and a cap, and don’t forget the kangaroo hops!

Dame Edna

Nothing says Aussie camp like Dame Edna Everage. With her extravagant glasses, purple hair and glitzy outfits, she’s hard to miss!

To pull this look together, you can use a cheap purple wig bedazzled glasses (available at most costume stores, or bedazzle your own), and a sparkly dress from your nearest op shop. Don’t forget her famous exaggerated Aussie accent for the full effect!

Ned Kelly

Australia’s most infamous outlaw, Ned Kelly, has inspired countless costume ideas over the years. His signature helmet (which you can make out of cardboard), a long coat and a fake beard will have people immediately recognising the bushranger legend. This is an easy DIY costume that you can create with items you already have at home!

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Celebrate this iconic Australian film by dressing up as one of the fabulous characters: Mitzi (Tick), Felicia (Adam), or Bernadette. Think big, bold wigs, extravagant dresses, and lots of sequins! You can find vibrant costumes and 80s inspired accessories at op shops to bring out your inner drag queen.

Cathy Freeman

Every Aussie remembers where they were when they watched Cathy Freeman sprint to victory at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Honour this sporting legend by recreating the famous bodysuit she wore during her historic race. Look for a cheap green or silver tracksuit from a secondhand store, or grab a form-fitting bodysuit online.

Shane Warne

Speaking of sporting legends, the late, great Shane Warne makes for a fun and easy Halloween costume. To nail his look, grab a green and gold cricket jersey and pants, a blonde wig and slather some white sunscreen across your nose.

Carry a cricket bat or ball, and when you’re feeling the moment, shout ‘HOWZAT!’ – a classic cricket call used when appealing for a wicket. You’ll be the life of the party!

Hugh Jackman / The Wolverine

Get ready to unleash your inner superhero with a Wolverine costume! All you need is a black leather jacket, a white tank top and some rugged jeans. To complete the look, make your own set of claws out of cardboard, and style your hair into Wolverine’s signature wild sideburns and spikes.

Bluey

Australia’s favourite cartoon dog is the perfect easy Halloween costume! Wear a blue onesie or pair a blue hoodie with matching pants. Add some simple face paint to mimic Bluey’s adorable doggy features, and finish the look with a pair of floppy ears and a tail. To make it even more fun, grab a friend to dress up in orange as Bluey’s little sister, Bingo.

As you gear up for a spooktacular Halloween, show your friends just how much you know about Aussie culture by dressing up as one of these icons. Good luck, and Happy Halloween!
