A Halal Guide to Adelaide

With Adelaide’s incredibly multicultural population, you’ll find food for every religious dietary law, and the city’s rich Muslim heritage (it’s home to the oldest mosque in Australia!) means authentic, delicious halal food is easily accessible.

Let’s run through some of Adelaide’s best halal eateries.

Restaurants

There are a range of dedicated halal restaurants across Adelaide, but most eateries in the city will have at least a few halal options. You can use the Zabihah website for a comprehensive map of Adelaide’s halal restaurants, although most well-established food spots will have their menus available online, so you can check to see if they offer halal food before you go.

Some halal highlights around Adelaide include Afghan restaurant Parwana, Pondok Daun for authentic Indonesian food, and Hut & Soul serve a range of South East Asian dishes – separate pork-free cooking utensils can be used upon request, and they have excellent lunch specials for students on a tight budget.

North Indian Cuisine, conveniently located in the CBD, Norwood, and Glenelg, serves up a variety of delicious halal meals. Plus, you’ll find plenty of tasty options priced under $10, making it a great choice for budget-conscious diners.

Cafés and takeaway

Brunch is an important ritual for Adelaideans, and you should definitely enjoy a leisurely weekend feed while you’re here. Le Souk is a halal-certified Algerian restaurant in the Adelaide Central Markets that is always packed with people – their Chakchouka is a must-try and super filling.

For a quick takeaway lunch while at uni, all of Warong’s South East Asian dishes are halal compliant and it’s central to all of the CBD’s university and TAFE campuses. For an incredible late-night feed, check out Afghan Charcoal Kebab House on Hindley Street.

Grocery stores and markets

Most of Adelaide’s bigger supermarkets will have an international food section, stocking halal staples. You’ll also find many products in Australia will come with a halal-certified stamp on the packaging – even Vegemite is halal!

For halal-specific supermarkets, Day2Day Supermarket in Mile End is perfect for stocking up on groceries, where along Prospect Road you’ll find Adam’s Halal Butcher and Supermarket and Afghan Supermarket

The Adelaide Central Market is a great place to stock up on local fruit and vegetables for the week, and O’Connells Meats in the Market Arcade also has halal options, meaning you can do all of your week’s grocery shopping in one place.

Festivals

As the capital of the Festival State, there’s always something happening in Adelaide. Some halal-friendly festivals you can visit are the annual Halal Food Festival, Indofest – Adelaide’s free Indonesian festival, which has a range of food stalls and trucks with halal options, and the Adelaide Multicultural Eid Festival.
