Australia Awards Scholarships: Applications Now Open for 2024

The wait is over! Australia Awards have announced applications for their 2024 scholarships are now open.

If you consider yourself a leader and want to enact change in your home country, this scholarship could be for you. Read on to find out the key details.

What are Australia Awards Scholarships?

Australia Awards scholarships are prestigious government-funded grants offered to up-and-coming leaders from developing countries to study in Australia before returning home with their learnings and contributing to their nations’ development. Specific fields of study are sponsored according to each country’s priority areas for development.

What are the benefits?

As stated on the Department of Home Affairs website, the following benefits generally apply to Australia Awards Scholarships:

  • full tuition fees
  • return air travel–payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • establishment allowance–a once-only payment as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, textbooks, study materials
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department.
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP)–a compulsory program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on living and studying in Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)–provided to cover the scholar’s basic medical costs (with the exception of pre-existing conditions)
  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees–if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
  • supplementary academic support may be available to ensure a scholar’s academic success or enhance their academic experience
  • fieldwork (for research awards and Masters by coursework which have a research component where fieldwork is compulsory) may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

How can I apply?

Before you apply, check to see what supporting documentation you will need. You can check your participating country profile to see if your country requires specific documents, such as referee reports.

The easiest way to apply is online. Head to the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS) to register and go through each step. You will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. Once submitted, your application cannot be changed. We strongly advise applicants applying online to do so well before the closing date to avoid delays

If you are unable to submit your application online, you can apply by mail. Check your participating country profile for contact details to retrieve a hardcopy application form and any other templates.

When do applications close?

All applications for the 2024 intake must be submitted by Monday, 1 May 2023 AEST 11:59pm.

What if I’m not eligible for an Australia Awards scholarship?
