The CWUR 2023 Rankings Are Out – Here Are the Top Universities in Australia

The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) has released its global university rankings for 2023 – and Australia has once again proven that it holds one of the best education systems in the world. The list ranks the top 2,000 universities in the world across a variety of criteria, including employability, faculty and research. Of the 39 Australian universities listed, the vast majority improved their position from last year’s rankings, signalling that Australian institutions are becoming increasingly renowned for their quality.

Which Australian universities are ranked in the top 200 in 2023? 

Seven Australian universities cracked the top 200 in the CWUR 2023:

  • University of Melbourne – #57
  • University of Sydney – #92
  • University of New South Wales – #104
  • University of Queensland – #105
  • Monash University – #128
  • University of Western Australia – #150

Which Australian universities have climbed the ranks?

Many Australian universities managed to secure higher positions in the CWUR 2023 than they did in 2022. Here are the education providers in the top 200 – all of which belong to the Group of Eight (Go8) – that moved up the ladder:

  • University of Melbourne – From #58 to #57: Known for its exceptional research outputs – made possible by its 100 research centres and institutes – the University of Melbourne has been named Australia’s top university. International students make up 40 per cent of its student body, with its international cohort originating from over 150 countries.
  • University of Sydney – From #98 to #92: Australia’s oldest university, the University of Sydney is revered around the world for its outstanding teaching quality and research initiatives. It is particularly well-regarded in the fields of medicine as well as arts and humanities.
  • University of New South Wales – From #109 to #104: Located in Sydney, the University of New South Wales is a stand-out in the fields of mineral and mining engineering, petroleum engineering, law, and accounting and finance. 
  • Monash University – From #123 to #121: Monash is Australia’s largest university. Its courses in disciplines such as engineering and technology, natural sciences, social sciences and management have been highly ranked.
