Discover Cairns in Pictures

Cairns, Australia is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world – and once you see it in pictures, it’s easy to see how it’s gained its reputation! From natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef to inner-city swimming pools, Cairns is full of unique attractions.

Are you keen to discover Cairns for yourself? Allow us to introduce you to this tropical, picturesque paradise.

Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef

A holiday in Cairns isn’t complete without a visit to the world-famous Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and the earth’s only living thing that’s visible from space. In Cairns, you have the chance to explore the reef’s breathtaking underwater world of colourful coral and inquisitive sea creatures. Whether you choose to snorkel, scuba dive or simply glide across the surface on a glass-bottom boat, there are plenty of ways to get to know the reef.

Kuranda

If you’re wondering what to do in Cairns, then a trip to Kuranda is a must. This charming region is home to colourful boutiques, cosy cafes and outstanding views, making it an undeniably photo-worthy destination. Plus, two of the most iconic things to do in Cairns involve travelling to and/or from the Kuranda region. The historic Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of Australia’s oldest and most scenic train lines, while the Skyrail Forest Cableway allows you to soar above the rainforest and soak up unique views.

The Daintree Rainforest

By far, one of Cairns’ most picturesque landmarks is its rainforests, particularly the Daintree Rainforest, which houses the Daintree National Park. Spanning roughly 1,200 square kilometres, the Daintree belongs to the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest in all of Australia. Its vines and canopies have been growing for over 180 million years, making it the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth. When you study in Cairns, you’ll have ample opportunity to immerse yourself in this gorgeous historical landscape.

Cairns Aquarium

Even sunny Cairns can experience bad weather occasionally, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo meeting the sea life. Cairns Aquarium is home to over 16,000 species of sea animals and features over 71 different exhibits. The aquarium also offers incredible interactive experiences, such as swimming with sharks and guided evening tours where you can dine under the water.

Rusty’s Markets

Rusty’s Markets is the ultimate foodie experience in Cairns. With over 180 market stalls overflowing with tropical fruits, organic vegetables, handmade goods and global food, you’re going to need a few hours here at least. The markets are open from 5am every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Join the locals and get acquainted with the abundance of produce that Cairns offers.

Cairns Esplanade

If you’re wondering what to do in Cairns on a budget, look no further than the Cairns Esplanade. Often considered the focal point of the city, the Cairns Esplanade has something for everyone. Here, you’ll find the ever-popular Cairns Lagoon, an 800-square-metre public swimming pool that supplies views across the Trinity Inlet. Surrounded by picnic tables, barbeque facilities and huge Banyan trees, the lagoon is the ultimate place to cool off on a hot afternoon. Hint: it’s also an ideal spot for a study break for those who study in Cairns.

Palm Cove

Visiting Palm Cove is one of the best things to do in the Northern Beaches of Cairns. The spectacular beach is arguably one of the most beautiful in the country, having even been featured in travel shows and magazines. As the name suggests, the beach is lined with palm trees but also has a rainforest walking track, making for an idyllic backdrop. If you’re planning to take a dip in the water, you won’t have to worry about stingers in the water – the beach has a swimming net to ensure your safety!
