If you're planning to take the IELTS test for study, work or migration in Australia, there's good news! IELTS has introduced a new option that gives test takers more flexibility in how they complete their English language test.
From October 2026, IELTS test takers in Australia can choose to complete the Writing section by hand while taking the rest of their test on a computer.
Here's what you need to know about the change.
What is the new IELTS Writing on Paper option?
The new Writing on Paper option allows you to handwrite your answers for the Writing component of IELTS, rather than typing them on a computer.
This means you can enjoy the benefits of IELTS on Computer, including faster results and access to IELTS One Skill Retake, while completing your Writing test with pen and paper.
The change follows feedback from test takers who wanted more choice in how they complete their exams.
"For some test takers, being able to write with pen and paper can reduce stress and help them focus on communicating their ideas clearly," said Simon Emmett, Chief Partner Officer at IDP Education.
Will the new option affect my IELTS score?
No. Whether you choose to type or handwrite your answers, the IELTS test content, duration and scoring criteria remain the same.
This means your results will continue to be assessed against the same standards and accepted by universities, employers and governments around the world.
If you've already completed a paper-based IELTS test, don't worry. Your existing results remain valid until the end of the recommended two-year period.
Where is IELTS Writing on Paper available?
The new option is currently available at selected IELTS test centres across Australia, including:
- Sydney
- Melbourne
- Brisbane
- Perth
- Adelaide
- Gold Coast
- Canberra
If you're more comfortable writing by hand, this could be a great option for your next IELTS test.
