Industry Chat / Simon Emmett, CEO of IDP Connect

New research shows international students keeping study dreams alive, for now.

This week IDP Connect released a global survey of nearly 6,900 applicants planning to study in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and US. The April survey was seeking to drill down into the current intent of students, their original motivations and also the considerations that were driving their decisions to study abroad. Interestingly, only 5% of applicants are no longer intending to complete their studies abroad, highlighting the resilience of international students and strong desire to fulfill their study goals.

“There was positive news for Australia, with demand remaining strong.”

A key observation was student safety. Of the students who had put their plans on hold or changed their minds about international education, 29% said this was due to feeling it was unsafe to travel to Australia for study.

The work of the Global Reputation Taskforce, with key support from Austrade, the universities and study bodies, had been a standout and resulted in the provision of positive support for students. The UK has recently announced a similar set up, but Simon stated that Australia had really taken the lead with the establishment of this Taskforce.

The results are clear that students are looking for a trusted voice of reliable information, with social media takeovers proving popular to share authentic stories of in-country students, an approach also taken during the Australian bushfires.

Students had responded that they were particularly concerned about teaching standards, with Simon adding that students were looking for international exposure. If certainty can be provided with post-study work eligibility would act as a driver for student interest.

Students want to commence studying when it is safe, reflecting the same views of the sector who are taking a safety first approach. Agents around the world will play an important role in helping students make the right choice for them, providing up to date information on travel restrictions and in-country support available. IDP are using their global platform and working with destination groups to ensure accurate and timely messaging is getting out to students.

With a view to the future, there is lots of positive work across the sector and strong interest from students in key markets with Simon stating that “the findings of the research highlight the strong opportunity for the sector to work together to hold on to student interest.”
