If you're planning to travel around Australia (or head overseas) on Jetstar, there's an important baggage change you'll want to know about.
From 2 February 2027, Jetstar is introducing a new carry-on baggage model that will change what's included in your fare and how you pack for your flight.
What's changing?
Under the new rules, every passenger will still be able to bring one small personal item for free, such as:
- A small backpack
- A handbag
- A laptop bag
The catch? It must fit under the seat in front of you.
If you want to bring a larger carry-on suitcase or backpack that needs to go in the overhead locker, you'll need to purchase Priority Carry-on. Prices will start from $25 one way and vary depending on the route. Priority Carry-on also includes priority boarding.
Another big change is that Jetstar is moving away from its current 7kg combined carry-on allowance. Instead of routinely weighing bags at the gate, the airline will focus on bag size, although any individual bag must still be light enough to be safely lifted (up to 10kg).
Why is Jetstar making this change?
Jetstar says the new system will:
- Speed up boarding
- Reduce delays caused by crowded overhead lockers
- Give customers more flexibility by letting them choose whether they pay for overhead baggage or not
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some travellers welcoming faster boarding while others see it as another airline fee.
Packing tips for international students
Whether you're flying home for the holidays or exploring Australia on a budget, smart packing can save you money.
Don't overpack
One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to bring everything "just in case."
Australia has supermarkets, pharmacies, department stores and discount retailers almost everywhere. Unless you're bringing something difficult or expensive to replace, you can usually buy it once you arrive.
Pack versatile clothing
Instead of packing five different outfits for every occasion, choose clothes that can be mixed and matched.
Wear your bulkiest items
If you're travelling with a jacket, hoodie or boots, wear them on the plane instead of squeezing them into your bag.
Think about what you'll actually use
Before packing something, ask yourself:
"Will I definitely use this during my trip?"
If the answer is "maybe", leave it behind.
Use packing cubes
Packing cubes help organise your clothes and make it easier to fit everything into a smaller bag. They also make unpacking much simpler when you're staying in hostels or student accommodation.
Check your airline before you fly
Baggage allowances can vary between airlines and fare types. Always check your booking before heading to the airport to avoid unexpected fees.
