Need to prove your English proficiency requirements for an Australian visa? New tests are now accepted!
As of 7 August 2025, the LANGUAGECERT Academic Test (LANGUAGECERT Academic), Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General) and Michigan English Test (MET) are now officially approved by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for all visa categories requiring proof of English language proficiency.
What is the LANGUAGECERT Academic Test?
This multilevel test is designed to assess your ability to understand, use, and communicate effectively in English within an academic setting. This includes comprehending lectures, participating in discussions, reading and analysing academic texts, and writing research papers or essays.
The test is broken up into Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, taking a total of 2 hours and 34 minutes, with official results available in 5 working days. Learn more about the test here.
What is the CELPIP General?
The CELPIP General evaluates test taker’s English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills. The test takes under 3 hours to complete and can be done in one sitting with no separate speaking session. Learn more about the test here.
What is the MET?
MET is aimed at the high-beginner to advanced levels (A2-C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) with emphasis on the intermediate levels (B1 and B2). The test is divided into four sections: Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking.
The listening and reading sections of MET are scored by computer at Michigan Language Assessment. The writing and speaking sections are scored by trained and certified raters using scoring criteria established by Michigan Language Assessment. Learn more about the test here.
Are online tests accepted?
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs does not accept evidence from English language tests that are delivered completely online. So, for example, the LANGUAGECERT Academic Online, MET Digital (taken at-home) and CELPIP Online will not be accepted for Australian visa purposes.
Tests may be available in either computer-based or paper-based formats, but the test must take place in a secure testing centre.
What if my test isn’t accepted anymore?
You can still use tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 as evidence of English proficiency for visa purposes until 6 August 2028, inclusive. However, this will depend on the visa. Check the Department of Home Affairs website for more details.
