Australia has introduced a new degree-level qualification for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector – the Vocational Degree. Part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), the Vocational Degree will have similar learning outcomes to the existing Bachelor Degree delivered in the higher education sector, but with a focus on practical learning.
Here’s what you need to know as an international student.
What’s a Vocational Degree?
The Vocational Degree is a qualification that focuses on advanced skills and specialised technical knowledge, with courses that are more practical and hands-on. The Vocational Degree will include a range of training delivery modes, including apprenticeships.
Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Centres of Excellence and the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Councils have begun developing Vocational Degree curricula, but this will take some time.
The Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (AUSMASA) is the first Jobs and Skills Council (JSC) to support the introduction of the Vocational Degree and will undertake a comprehensive study of Vocational Degrees and apprenticeships undertaken at higher qualification levels. AUSMASA has noted that the Vocational Degree provides an exciting alternative to help students reach their career goals, including in the rapidly evolving mining and automative industries.
Why is it being introduced?
The Australian Government’s 2023 Jobs and Opportunities: Working Future White Paper highlighted a need for higher-level tertiary skills to meet industry demands. This new degree is designed to fill that gap. Leveraging the Vocational Education and Training sector, the Vocational Degree will deliver skills-based, industry-focused qualifications. This means you’ll be graduating ready to enter the workforce, meeting the needs and demands of industry.
Why consider a Vocational Degree?
For international students, it’s a new way to gain industry-specific skills that can boost your chances of getting a job in Australia and globally.
If you’re looking for a qualification that’s practical, in-demand, and aligned with real-world industry needs, a Vocational Degree could be worth considering!
