The Northern Territory (NT) Government is calling for more skilled migration to help meet the Territory’s growing workforce needs.

On 12 September 2025, Minister for International Education, Migration and Population Robyn Cahill attended the Ministerial Migration Roundtable in Melbourne. The event brought together leaders from across Australia to discuss migration planning and policy.

The NT economy is expected to grow by 18.4% between 2025 and 2029. To keep up with this growth, more than 14,000 new workers will be needed in the next five years.

Minister Cahill said she will be urging the Federal Government to speed up the process of confirming how many skilled migrant places each state and territory will receive, and to give the NT a bigger share than last year.

The NT Government has also announced a $2 million annual package over the next two years. This funding will focus on attracting skilled workers and international students, developing the workforce, helping employers keep staff, and ensuring visa applications are processed quickly.

For international students, this could mean more opportunities to live, study and work in the Northern Territory as the government pushes to fill job shortages and grow the local economy.
