Australia Announces $11.2 Million Scholarship Initiative for Indian International Students

The Australian Government has released an exciting new initiative for Indian international students! In an effort to strengthen ties with one of the country’s most vital partners in the Indo-Pacific region, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne has announced a new set of initiatives, including an $11.2 million Maitri Scholarships Program.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new scholarship program and how it may benefit you as an Indian international student.

What is the Maitri Scholarships Program?

The Maitri Scholarships Program will financially support high-achieving Indian students studying in Australia over a four-year period. The new funding initiative is designed to not only welcome back Indian international students to Australian universities but to endorse collaboration between India and Australia through education. Three Maitri (which means friendship) initiatives will bolster cultural and educational ties through government funding and scholarship schemes.

In her recent press conference, Payne also announced two other Maitri initiatives. The $3.5 million Maitri Grants and Fellowship Program, designed to “build links between future leaders”, will support mid-career Australian and Indian professionals. Additionally, the $6.1 million Australia-India Maitri Cultural Partnership will boost artistic talent and cultural exchanges in creative industries.

Speaking to SBS Hindi, Bhavika Unnadkat, the head of data governance and knowledge management at Energy Australia, highlighted that “these scholarships/funds will help students to focus on studies rather than survival, especially after what COVID has done to the economy.”

Am I eligible for the Maitri Scholarships Program?

If you are an international student from India pursuing a degree in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for the Maitri Scholarships Program. The stipend can be used to cover a wide range of costs associated with studying abroad, including course fees and living expenses. Further details on eligibility criteria, application requirements and timelines are expected to become available in the near future.

What if I’m not eligible for the Maitri Scholarships Program?

If you are not eligible for the new funding initiative, there are still many scholarships you can explore. Visit Study Australia for more information on scholarships to study in Australia or check out our guide to some of Australia’s best scholarships.
