Getting involved in a university club or society is a great way to get to know your fellow students, build your skills and meet like-minded people who share your interests and values.
Starting your own club or society can give you a space to share your knowledge and passion with those around you, and it’s also a valuable thing to have on your resume for future work opportunities. If that appeals to you, then keep reading to find out how to get started.
Check what already exists
Before jumping in and starting your own, take a look at your university’s current list of clubs and societies. This will make sure you’re not doubling up on something that’s already running, and also helps you get a good idea of what’s popular with your peers.
You might find something similar already exists, and you can just join in, or maybe you’ll notice a gap that you can help fill. Perhaps there are a lot of specific sports clubs, but nothing for those who just enjoy social movement, or there are lots of cultural societies, but nothing specific to your home country. If it’s something you think is valuable, there’ll likely be others who feel the same.
Find like-minded students
Most universities require a minimum number of members (usually current enrolled students) to officially register a club. Think about the people around you, whether that’s your classmates, roommates or friends and check in with them first to see if they’re interested in joining you.
You can also post in Facebook groups or uni forums to gauge interest. You don’t need a massive group to start with, just a few people who are excited about your idea.
Set clear goals for the club
What exactly is it that you want your club to do? Is it running events? Sharing culture? Learning new skills? Or maybe it’s just about meeting new people and having fun. Whatever it is, being clear on your purpose will help other students decide if it aligns with their values (and their schedules!) and help you with any decision-making going forward.
Apply to start your club
Each university has its own process for registering new clubs or societies, but it commonly involves:
- Filling out an application form
- Deciding on your founding members and executive committee (e.g. President, Treasurer, etc.)
- Agreeing to the rules and policies set out by your education provider’s student association
- Planning where your funding is going to come from for any events/costs involved in your club
Some education providers also have different tiers of clubs or societies where you have the option to be more or less formal (e.g. informal clubs may not be required to have an executive committee and their funding may be managed by the education provider, rather than the club itself). Make sure you talk to your student association to find out the specifics for your school.
Promote your club
Once your club is approved, it’s time to spread the word! Use social media, noticeboards, newsletters and campus events (like club days or O-Week) to attract new members. Word of mouth also goes a long way, so if you feel comfortable, ask if you can speak up in a tutorial or study session!
Plan your first event
Running events is a great way to invite potential new members to come and see what your club or society is all about. You could plan something as simple as a coffee catch-up or as involved as a fundraiser or cinema night. Think about your target audience and what you would like to attend, and go from there.
You can also offer some fun incentives for new members, like:
- Free snacks or drinks
- A small giveaway
- Member discounts at local stores (make sure to chat to any stores first, but many local businesses are very open to supporting university students in exchange for some free promo!)
Most importantly – keep it fun and welcoming
The best clubs are those where members feel included, relaxed and excited to be a part of it. Keep things flexible, involve your members in decisions where possible and celebrate small wins, like hosting your first event or reaching a dozen members!
