If you’re hoping to settle long-term in the ACT or Queensland, we’ve got great news – the state and territory’s Skilled Migration Programs for 2023-24 are now open for applications! Here’s what you need to know about applying for skilled migration in the ACT and Queensland this year.
The ACT’s Skilled Migration Program 2023-24
The ACT’s nomination allocation for the 2023-24 migration year is 1,200 places (600 for the 190 visa and 600 for the 491 visa). It received no Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (BIIP) allocations.
The ACT uses a pro-rata allocation system, with a set number of allocations available per month over the course of the year. The next Canberra Matrix invitation round is set to be held before 29 September 2023.

Queensland’s Skilled Migration Program 2023-24
The program opened on 5 September 2023 to both onshore and offshore applicants.
In its announcement of the opening, the Queensland Government confirmed that it – much like the Tasmanian Government – had also received fewer allocations than last year. Queensland has received a total of 1,550 allocations (900 places for the 190 visa and 650 places for the 491 visa) and no BIIP allocations. As a result, it stated that this year’s state nominated program would be “very competitive” and encouraged potential applicants to explore alternative visa options.
While the nominations are open to both onshore and offshore applicants, the requirements and criteria differ slightly for each type of applicant. Learn more about onshore requirements and offshore requirements.
