But life tends to be a bit more affordable in regional and rural areas. For example, median rental costs in Melbourne top out at $560 per week, while people in regional areas pay a median rent of more than $100 less.
In some areas, the difference is even greater! An apartment or unit in Mildura costs an average of just $360 per week, and just $280 in Swan Hill.
2. A rich Australian experience
Living regionally gives you the chance to explore the best of Australia, no matter what you want from your international study experience.

7. The chance to stay on in Australia
Some international graduates are eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows them to stay in Australia for two to three years. However, if you live in a regional area, you may be able to apply to the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream after your first Temporary Graduate visa, giving you an extra year or two.
There are also other visas specifically to help address labour shortages in regional areas, including the Skilled Regional visa, making regions an attractive choice for those who want to extend their stay in Australia.
