What is Perth Famous For?

Perth, the sun-kissed capital of Western Australia, is often known for its endless beaches, sprawling parklands and laidback lifestyle. But there’s so much more to this vibrant city than its picture-perfect natural beauty.

From the arts and sport to its busy food scene, Perth has its own unique charm. But what exactly is Perth famous for? Let’s dive in!

Arts and entertainment

While Perth may be laidback, its arts and entertainment scene is buzzing! Perth is home to one of Australia’s most prestigious performing arts schools: WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts), an institution that Cen Huang, a PhD candidate in music studies, from Nanjing, China, immediately knew was the right choice for him.

“I chose WAAPA for its global reputation and its supportive, collaborative environment that fosters both technical proficiency and artistic growth,” he shares.

This renowned institution has trained big names like Hugh Jackman, Frances O’Connor, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Amy Manford and Linda May Han Oh and Tim Minchin (just to name a few!).

If that’s not impressive enough, WAAPA is set to expand with a new world-class, purpose-built ECU City campus – open to students in 2026 – making it even more accessible to aspiring actors, dancers and musicians. As an international student studying here, you’ll be right in the heart of Perth’s arts and culture hub, ready to collaborate with local artists, established companies, and cultural institutions, gaining invaluable industry exposure and experience.

With 300 live performances from students year-round, WAAPA adds an undeniable buzz to Perth’s cool city vibes, and the new campus is set to be an incredible destination for creatives and artists.

“Studying at WAAPA’s future city centre campus will provide excellent access to Perth’s cultural scene, enhancing connections with the arts community and professional networks,” Cen says.

Kings Park – one of the world’s biggest!

Kings Park is one of the largest and – in our opinion – most beautiful inner-city parks in the world! Home to the Western Australian Botanic Garden, which displays over 3,000 species of WA’s unique flora, and Gija Jumulu (Giant Boab), a tree estimated to be over 750 years old, it’s the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the CBD.

“I appreciate Perth’s balance between a vibrant arts scene and accessible natural beauty, offering a refreshing lifestyle,” Cen explains.

Life by the Quay

Watching the sunset from Elizabeth Quay in the city centre is a must-do while living in Perth.

This busy waterfront precinct has quickly become a highlight of the CBD. From the iconic Spanda sculpture, which stands at 29m tall, to catching a gondola ride across the Swan River, there’s so much to explore.

Paired with Kings Park, Cen thinks these complementary landmarks summarise Perth as a whole. “Elizabeth Quay highlights Perth’s modern culture and scenic waterfront, while Kings Park offers stunning city views and a peaceful connection to Western Australia’s natural landscape. Together, they provide a well-rounded introduction to the city’s unique character.”

Foodie heaven

Perth’s food and drink scene is an adventure in itself! Thanks to its proximity to Margaret River and Swan Valley, two of Australia’s best wine regions, Perth is blessed with plenty of fresh local produce and outstanding wines.

Northbridge in the city centre is your one-stop shop for amazing eateries. There’s no shortage of chic cafes, trendy restaurants, and rooftop bars to explore. Plus, with so many international dining options, you’re sure to discover something new or find a taste of home. Make sure to visit Chinatown. Developed in the 1980s to mark the presence of the Chinese community in Western Australia since the 1840s, this is the best spot for dim sum, bubble tea and roast duck dinners.

Festival vibes

If you love a good celebration, make sure you don’t miss the Perth Festival! Held annually in February, the Perth Festival is Australia’s longest-running arts festival, attracting world-class performers, artists and musicians from across the globe. From theatre productions and live music to large-scale art installations, this month-long event turns the city into a creative playground. Whether you’re into classical music or experimental dance, there’s something for everyone at this cultural extravaganza.

FRINGE WORLD is another highlight you should add to your calendar. From comedy, music and musicals, circus and much more, this month-long festival brings the whole city to life.

Home to the quokkas

Perth is the gateway to Rottnest Island, home to the world’s happiest animal: the quokka! These cute marsupials have become Insta-famous for their constant smiles, making Rottnest Island a top destination for tourists and locals alike.

Just a short ferry ride from Perth – which, if you leave from Barrack Street Jetty, means gorgeous views of the city centre from the Swan River – Rottnest offers not only quokka selfies but breathtaking beaches, cycling trails and crystal-clear snorkelling spots.

Perth is a city that combines the best of both worlds – a laidback coastal lifestyle with a rich, evolving cultural scene. Whether you’re exploring its world-class beaches, soaking up local history or attending an exciting new show, Perth offers something for everyone.
