Why Are Fireworks in The News at The Moment?

If you’ve been reading the news lately, you might have seen some interesting stories about fireworks.

And, with New Year’s Eve right around the corner, you might be wondering whether to be concerned.

Read on to find out what you need to know about firework.

Why are fireworks in the news?

You may have seen recent news about fireworks, especially concerning safety and health.

Lately, there have been some calls for increased restrictions. This is partly due to animal welfare, as the bright colours and loud noises can cause stress to pets and wildlife.

Other concerns include the cost of holding these events and threats to public safety, as well as environmental concerns.

These considerations have even led Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Council to cancel their 2024 midnight fireworks show, although they’ll still have an early session at 8.30 pm.

Are fireworks legal in Australia?

Australian fireworks laws can vary greatly depending on where you are, so it’s a good idea to check the laws in your state or territory.

In New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia, it is illegal to buy, possess or use fireworks unless you’re a licensed pyrotechnician.

Western Australia also restricts the sale and use of fireworks to licenced people, with the exception of bon-bons, party poppers, Christmas crackers, throwdowns and sparklers.

In the Northern Territory, residents are allowed to purchase and use fireworks for Territory Day on the 1st of July. Similarly, Tasmanians can let off fireworks on Cracker Night in May, provided they have a permit.

While it’s rare, you may see fireworks for sale in shops, especially outside of major cities. Don’t be fooled into thinking this makes them legal, though — you can still get in trouble for buying, possessing or using them.

Punishments can range from steep fines to jail time. If you’re unsure, it’s best not to risk it.

What’s happening with New Year’s Eve?

Luckily, Australia has plenty of licenced professionals who love to put on a show, especially for events like New Year’s Eve!

Whether you live in a major city or a small town, there’s sure to be an incredible fireworks display near you. If you don’t know where your nearest will be, check with your local council to find out more.

Some of the biggest New Year’s Eve fireworks events around the country include:

  • Brisbane South Bank, 7.45 pm and midnight

  • Sydney Sydney Harbour and surrounds, 9 pm and midnight
  • Hobart Hobart Waterfront, 9.30 pm and midnight

Making the most of fireworks

Brilliant pyrotechnics are breathtaking to watch, but it’s important to take a few simple steps to enjoy them safely.

If you’re handling fireworks yourself on Cracker Night or Territory Day, it’s important to read up on firework safety and follow all official advice. In particular, experts recommend you don’t handle fireworks if you’ve been drinking, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and choose clothes made of cotton or other less-flammable materials.

Larger shows like New Year’s events are generally very safe. Avoid getting too close to the fireworks, and don’t go anywhere that’s been blocked off to the public. If you’re sensitive to noise, you may wish to bring earplugs or headphones.

If you have pets who are prone to stress during fireworks, make sure you look after your furry friends. The RSPCA suggests a number of helpful steps for pet owners, including keeping your animals inside, creating a safe environment and making sure your microchip information is up-to-date in case they get loose.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead, especially for popular events with multiple locations. Try to arrive early to secure a great vantage spot, and bring some items with you, like a blanket or chair to sit on, snacks and water.

Then it’s time to kick back, soak up the vibrant atmosphere and ring in the new year with a breathtaking, awe-inspiring fireworks show!
