You’ve done O-Week, and you’ve settled into your accommodation, but now comes the biggest step of all—your first day of university.

While it might seem like a big deal, don’t let it overwhelm you. It’s just another day! We’ve compiled a handy list for your first day, to start you off on the right foot and help you ease into your new life.

Before the day

Create a lesson timetable
An easy-to-understand lesson timetable means you’ll always know where you’re supposed to be and when.

Create a study timetable
Organise your study routine around your classes, for both study and other activities. Organisation now will help you be prepared for the heavier workloads later in the semester. But remember to be flexible, as you might want to take on extra classes or an activity outside of your contact hours.

Charge your devices
Make sure your laptop and phone are charged. You don’t want to run out of battery halfway through your second class.

Print out any official university documents
Make sure you’ve printed all the paperwork you need, so orientation is an easier process.

Pack your first-day essentials
You won’t need a lot of things on your first day, but it does help to be prepared. Make sure you’ve got the following:

  • student ID (if you got in O-Week)
  • official university documents
  • diary
  • textbooks
  • campus map
  • textbooks for all subjects (or at least a couple of subjects!)
  • folders for all subjects
  • a couple of pens and pencils
  • cables for electronic devices
  • snacks
  • money for coffee!

Put it all next to your bag to remind yourself to check it in the morning.

Get your outfit ready
This isn’t for everyone, but for those of you who worry about what to wear, take the ‘on-the-day stress’ away and decide on your outfit the night before. Lay it out next to your bag so you’re all ready to go in the morning.

Set your alarm
Don’t forget to set your alarm! Try 15 minutes earlier than you think you’ll need, just in case, to give yourself a little extra time.

On the day

Get up on time
Don’t sleep in—you want to start your day unhurried and relaxed.

Have a decent breakfast
Not to sound like your parents, but a good breakfast will set you up for the rest of the day. You don’t want to be thinking about your stomach during your first class, or running out of energy before lectures have even begun.

Double check your schedule
Make sure you know where you’re supposed to be and when. You don’t want to be the one showing up to the wrong class on the first day. Plan to get to uni early, too, so you aren’t rushing, and you can ease yourself into it.

Bring a water bottle
Keeping hydrated is key to staying focused. Get a good water bottle that will last years, so you just need to refill it and go.

After the day

Organise your study area
As soon as you get back from class, spend a few minutes putting together your first-day notes, books, and papers. Organise them in a meaningful, but easy-to-remember manner. When your study space is tidy, it’ll seem like less of a chore to actually sit down and study later.

Congratulate yourself
You did it! You survived your first day of uni.
