What Are the Most In-Demand Careers in Adelaide?

This article is sponsored by TAFE South Australia

If you’re approaching the end of your studies, you’re probably considering the kind of career you’d like to pursue when you finish. If you’re planning to work in Adelaide, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Adelaide is home to a wide array of fast-growing and unique industries. Whether you’ve studied tourism, engineering or healthcare, you’re sure to find a prosperous career in the South Australian capital. Here are some of the industries with the most in-demand careers in Adelaide.

Winemaking, production and distribution

If you’re a wine lover, South Australia is the place for you. Renowned as one of the best wine and tourism regions in the world, South Australia rules the Australian wine sector. The state is responsible for nearly 80 per cent of the country’s wine production and 60 per cent of its total exports. As a result, it also accounts for many of Australia’s regional jobs, providing work opportunities to people across all stages of wine production, from the vineyards to the cellar doors.

Adelaide is at the heart of this vibrant wine culture, having earned a spot in the Great Wine Capital Network. The city houses the National Wine Centre as well as national industry research bodies, such as Wine Australia, the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia, Australian Vignerons and the Australian Wine Research Institute. Whether you’re hoping to work as an agribusiness manager growing grapes, a winemaker, a wine marketing coordinator or a warehouse manager, there are plenty of jobs available in the Adelaide wine industry.

Defence

Did you know that South Australia is known as the “Defence State”? Home to seven of the world’s top 10 defence companies, the state has one of the strongest defence industries on the planet, making it one of the best industries for work in Australia. The city of Adelaide is a hub of defence research and development centres, which work collaboratively with technology companies to stay ahead of the global game. With $90 billion worth of defence projects to be developed in Adelaide over the next 50 years – including two major naval shipbuilding projects – there will be thousands of job opportunities for people across the state.

Not to mention, many of Adelaide’s educational institutions offer programs tailored to the defence sector. TAFE South Australia, for instance, features a Diploma of Engineering – Technical, which can be applied in the naval shipbuilding sector.

Cybersecurity

Given that Adelaide is considered a regional destination for migration purposes, you may have the misperception that living in a regional area in Australia means you won’t have access to innovative technological careers. The reality, however, is quite the contrary.

Australia’s information technology (IT) and cybersecurity sectors are rapidly expanding – and Adelaide is playing a key role in this growth. According to TAFE South Australia, an estimated 11,000 new jobs will be created in the Adelaide cybersecurity industry over the next 10 years, due in large part to the opening of the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre (A3C). To keep up with this demand, the institution offers IT and cybersecurity certificate programs to prepare students for a future career in this transformative sector. Some of the roles in this high-demand industry include cyber risk consultant, cyber risk assurance officer, cyber analyst and security technician.

Renewable energy

South Australia is a world leader in renewable energy. As part of its commitment to its emission agreements, the state government is taking steps to maximise job opportunities associated with renewable energy and energy storage projects. Some areas of focus include large-scale renewable energy generation and storage, hydrogen production and supply-chain development of low carbon technologies. In fact, Adelaide is now the first council in South Australia to use 100 per cent renewable electricity, meaning any facilities you use in the City of Adelaide – such as Adelaide Aquatic Centre, UParks and Adelaide Town Hall – are powered entirely by renewable energy. With this growing renewable energy sector, you’re sure to have your pick of jobs if you’re hoping to pursue this career path in Adelaide.

Healthcare

Are you hoping to help others by pursuing a career in healthcare? With a booming healthcare sector, Adelaide is the perfect location to do exactly that. The city houses the Adelaide BioMed City, one of the largest health science precincts in the Southern Hemisphere. This hub for health and life sciences works across various fields, including research, education, clinical care and population health. Here you’ll also find the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), one of Australia’s most technologically advanced healthcare facilities.

Game art and design

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people were finding different methods of staying busy at home, which led to significant growth in the gaming industry. Upon seeing this trend, the South Australian government introduced a 10 per cent rebate program for production costs associated with game-making. According to Skills Minister David Pisoni, the move is expected to create “a snowball effect” for jobs across the state. Founder of the South Australian gaming company Foxie Games, Dineth Abeynayake, echoed the minister’s sentiment, saying: “I think it’s going to lead to a lot of job creation in a lot of different areas from… programmers to artists to writers and designers.”

The Adelaide CBD is home to a long list of gaming companies, many of which collaborate at the Game Plus coworking space. Tenants of Game Plus include Blue Volcano, Chaos Theory Games, In Games, Lyre Lyre Studios, Mighty Kingdom and SmashByte. If you’re keen to turn your passion for gaming into a career, Adelaide is the spot to do it
