Australia’s Best Beaches

Ask anyone overseas what they know about Australia, and you’re bound to get the same few answers: Amazing beaches, friendly people, hot weather and dangerous animals.

While there are plenty of myths about this great southern land, it is true that the country is home to some of the world’s best and most pristine beaches.

There are breathtaking beach spots all over this great country, so whether you’re studying in a coastal paradise like the Gold Coast or in a vibrant inland city like Canberra, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get out and soak up the sun at some of Australia’s best spots.

Bondi Beach, Sydney

No list of Aussie beaches would be complete without this icon. If you live in Sydney or Canberra, it’s well worth the trip to check out the golden sands, the ocean pools and the fantastic array of cafes and restaurants nearby.

Accommodation: Hotels from $140, hostels from $70.

Main Beach, Byron Bay

Another iconic spot, Byron Bay has transformed over the past few years from a hidden gem to a favourite escape for the rich and famous — just ask the Hemsworths! You’ll find loads of beaches to choose from, but we recommend starting with Main Beach due to its incredible surf, gorgeous views and proximity to the main town.

Accommodation: Hotels from $110, hostels from $65 and $50 for a camping spot.

Kirra Beach, Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is home to so many great beaches, but if we had to pick one, it’s local fave Kirra. With white sand, crystal clear water and whale-watching, this spot is just far enough from the pumping Surfers Paradise to exude small-town charm.

Accommodation: Hotels from $110, hostels from $50 and camping spots just $24.

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays

With its stunning white sands, turquoise waters and semi-remote location along the Great Barrier Reef — one of the seven natural wonders of the world — it’s clear why Whitehaven regularly tops the list of best beaches in the world

Access to the beach is via tour only, so look to stay nearby on the mainland at Airlie Beach or splurge on a luxury stay at nearby resorts, Daydream Island or Hamilton Island.

Accommodation: Airlie beach hotels from $115, $55 for a hostel and $42 for a campsite.

Cottesloe Beach, Perth

Just 20 minutes from Perth’s city centre, this gorgeous spot is a must-see. Head there in the morning for the best experience, then head into town to explore the many other fun activities on offer.

Accommodation: Hotels from $110, hostels from $50.

Glenelg Beach, Adelaide

It may be the most famous beach in Adelaide, but that doesn’t mean this happening spot should be overlooked! Glenelg Beach boasts loads of restaurants, a great atmosphere, plenty of entertainment and calm waters, all just a 20-minute tram ride from town.

Accommodation: Hotels from $135, hostels from $35.

Don’t stop there!

Australia is home to more than 10,000 beaches, so don’t stop at just one! Instead, consider this a starting point for your grand beach adventure!

If you’re planning to travel, a good time to do it is during your study breaks. Even better, try to book trips outside of school holidays where you can — universities often have breaks slightly longer than schools — so you can enjoy cheaper accommodation and quieter beaches.

Before you go, make sure you know about beach safety and take the time to protect yourself from the harsh sun! With that, you’ll be ready to get out there and enjoy the best beaches Australia has to offer.
