Getting Fit in Perth

As a coastal city with unbeatable weather, Perth is one of the easiest places to soak up the sun and stay fit. While physical exercise is one of the most important ways to stay mentally and physically well, endless coastlines and scenic bushland make exercise in Perth affordable, relaxing, and fun.

We have made of list of the top ways you can get fit in Perth, and maybe even learn an entirely new skill as well.

Running 

Perth is an active city and particularly popular with runners. A great community and amazing trails make this an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable hobby. 

Lake Monger

Lake Monger is a beautiful, 3.5km flat loop around a suburban wetland. Full of native birdlife, the course is popular with joggers year-round. 

West Coast Drive

Witness Perth’s famous sunset while running along the boardwalk at Scarborough. This flat, coastal jog travels along Perth’s edge and is guaranteed to offer the most spectacular coastal view. Watch out for the strong sea breeze however, running into the afternoon gust can add an extra challenge to your workout!

Join a local group or event! 

One of the best ways to commit to your running goals is by joining a local run group. There are heaps of welcoming communities throughout Perth catering to all levels of fitness. 

The University of Western Australia offers a run club open to both UWA students and the general public. They typically explore the tracks leading around the Swan River and all levels of fitness are welcome!

Perth’s City to Surf is one of the biggest running events on the city’s calendar. This challenging route offers either a 4km or 12km track. The 12km takes runners from the central CBD to cheering crowds by the beach. 

Cycling 

Cycling is very popular in Perth, and you’ll often see flocks of bikes early in the morning commuting through the streets. 

South Perth Rouleurs 

Joining a cycling club helps you stay motivated plus allows you to move safely along the roads. The South Perth Rouleurs are a local Perth cycling community catering to all skill levels, from novice through to A-grade racers.  

Hiking 

Go explore Perth’s natural surrounds on one of the region’s numerous walking trails. A hike is excellent for developing strength and fitness while enjoying the state’s spectacular natural beauty.

Darling Range

Approximately one hour drive from Perth, the Darling Range has a variety of routes for visitors to discover. If you’re looking for a challenge, sections along the suburb of Kalamunda offer rocky inclines plus fabulous views. 

Balwins Bluff

Also one hour drive from Perth, Balwins Bluff trail is a 6km return walk through the Serpentine National Park. If you go during winter, you can even see the water flowing down the beautiful Serpentine Falls.

If you’re interested in something different, there are plenty more adventurous sports to try in Perth (no matter your level of starting fitness!). 

Surfing 

In a city full of surfers, you’ll find boards to rent from almost every beach and surf lessons available year-round. 

Trigg Beach has a local surf school where newbies can learn to ride their first white-wash wave! They offer both group and private lessons, plus boards and wetsuits to rent. 

Bouldering

Similar to traditional rope climbing, bouldering involves climbing up a technical wall but does not allow you to move as high. Thick mats catch you when jumping down from the climb, so you don’t need a harness. Bouldering has quickly grown in popularity and gyms are usually full of friendly, social regulars who love meeting new people and offering advice. 

Portside Boulders offers gyms around the city, including O’Connor, Osbourne Park and Willetton. They also offer yoga classes, strength training, and a discount for student entry!
