If you’re an international student staying in Australia over the December holidays, you’re definitely not alone. With summer in full swing, your campus getting quieter and the cities buzzing with festive events, it’s a brilliant time to explore, earn a bit of extra cash, and reset before the next semester.

If you’re craving adventure, want to try something new or simply want to get organised, here are some great ways to make the most of your break.

Look for a Christmas casual role

December is the peak hiring season across Australia, especially in retail, hospitality and customer service. While many Christmas casual roles are filled early, some places still need extra support right up until the last minute - especially larger retailers, supermarkets and cafes.

A short-term job can help you boost your savings before the new year, gain local work experience for your CV, and meet new people during a time when your friends might be away.

Not sure where to start? Search on Seek, Indeed, or even go directly in store, as many smaller businesses hire simply by putting a sign in the window.

Get into a new hobby

Australia’s summer season is perfect for exploring hobbies you didn’t have time for during the semester. Depending on your budget and where you live, you could try:

  • Joining a surf or paddleboarding lesson at the beach
  • Learning to skate or cycle with friends
  • Trying a new sport through community clubs
  • Signing up for a short course (photography, cooking, pottery, etc.)

Many cities also run free or low-cost summer workshops, often through councils, libraries, and community centres. These can be great places to meet people outside your usual circle.

Travel interstate and explore Australia

If you’re not travelling home, why not treat yourself to a mini Australian adventure? December is the perfect time for road trips, beach days or exploring cities you haven’t visited yet.

A few ideas:

  • Melbourne for arts, culture and the Great Ocean Road
  • Sydney for beaches, festive events and New Year’s Eve on Sydney Harbour
  • Brisbane/Gold Coast for warm weather and theme parks
  • Adelaide for wineries, beaches and festivals
  • Tasmania for hiking, nature and cooler temperatures
  • The Red Centre for Uluru, Kings Canyon and truly iconic landscapes

If flights are pricey, consider buses or trains - these are often cheaper and a great way to see more of the country while you travel.

Catch up on life admin

We know - boring! But with uni on break, it’s the perfect time to sort out those tasks that always get pushed aside during the term. Think about:

  • Applying for or upgrading your Australian driver's licence
  • Sorting out your visa documents or checking expiry dates
  • Updating your Medicare or insurance details
  • Opening or reviewing your bank accounts, setting a budget for the new year
  • Booking health appointments you’ve been avoiding

A productive week now can save a lot of stress later in the year - trust us, future you will thank you!

Do a Summer Clear-Out

A tidy space equals a tidy mind, and summer is the perfect time for a clear out. Go through your wardrobe, desk and cupboards to find anything you no longer need.

You could:

  • Sell clothes on Depop, Facebook Marketplace, or Gumtree
  • Donate items in good condition to local op shops
  • Reorganise your room to make it feel fresh for the new year

Even small changes can make your home feel calmer and more inviting, perfect for the start of a new year.

Rest, recover, and reset

Finally, remember: it’s okay to take things slow! You’ve probably had a busy semester, and the holidays are a chance to recharge. Whether that means beach days, reading, exploring your city or catching up on sleep, use this time to do what makes you feel good.
