Easter in Australia usually falls between late March and April, bringing with it a much-needed long weekend.
In 2026, the Easter long weekend runs from Good Friday (3 April) to Easter Monday (6 April), giving you four full days off study - how good!
Easter is traditionally a Christian holiday, but in Australia, it’s also enjoyed as a public holiday period, meaning most people get time off work or uni.
Because of this, it’s one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Flights and accommodation can get very expensive, and popular destinations book out quickly. While it might be tempting to plan a big interstate trip, this long weekend is actually the perfect opportunity to slow down and reset before the rest of the semester.
Here are some of the best ways to make the most of your Easter long weekend.
Become a tourist in your own city

You don’t need to leave your city to have a great long weekend! In fact, staying local can be just as enjoyable. Use this time to visit places you’ve been meaning to check out but haven’t had time for.
Head down to the beach, visit a national park, check out local museums, galleries and markets or even neighbourhoods you’ve never explored. Many Australian cities have beautiful coastal walks and scenic lookouts that are perfect for a relaxed day out. Pack a picnic, bring your friends and treat it like a mini holiday!
Plan a road trip

Need a change of scenery? What about a day trip? Grab some friends, hop in the car and take off to a nearby town. Look for hiking trails, waterfalls or wine regions within a couple of hours of your city. Splitting costs between friends makes it much cheaper, and you’ll still feel like you’re miles away from home.
Catch up on study

Okay, it’s not the most exciting option, but it’s one of the smartest things to do over the break! If your assignments and exams are starting to pile up, the Easter long weekend couldn’t come at a better time. Plus, we've found some procrastination hacks that actually work.
Using even one or two days to get ahead can reduce your stress later on. If you’re sick of studying at home, try going to a nearby cafe or library to keep things fresh, and reward yourself with a fun activity or treat afterwards. Future you will be very grateful!
Host a potluck or lunch

If you’re staying in, why not invite your friends over? Hosting a potluck or lunch is a great way to enjoy your break and build community with new and old friends.
Ask everyone to bring their favourite dish from their home country, so you can all taste a new cuisine. And if you really want to get into the Easter spirit, why not bake some hot cross buns or organise an Easter egg hunt for your friends?
Get active outdoors

Enjoy that cooler autumn weather by getting outside! Go for a run, try a new hiking or cycling trail, join a social sports team or even plan a beach day. Getting outdoors will boost your mood and give you more energy, resetting your mind for the rest of the semester.
Try something new

If there’s an activity you’ve always wanted to try, now’s the time! Why not book a pottery or jewellery making workshop, or get some friends together for a dance or cooking class? If you’d rather keep it low-cost, you could follow a YouTube tutorial, start a mini DIY project or learn a new skill online.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money or travel far and wide to make the most of your Easter long weekend! Take some time to rest, have fun and head back into the semester feeling refreshed and ready to go.
