Ask anyone about Melbourne, and coffee is probably the first thing they mention.

Indeed, between its thriving cafe culture and its caffeine-obsessed locals, Melbourne has earned its reputation as the coffee capital of the world.

But where did this love of coffee come from? And where can you get the city’s best brews? Read on to learn everything you need to know about Melbourne’s coffee culture.

Market Lane Coffee, Queen Victoria Market

A history of coffee in Melbourne

This city can trace its coffee culture all the way back to the 1830s, when ‘coffee palaces’ and street-side stalls supplied locals with their favourite beverages day and night.

But Melbourne’s distinctive cafe culture really got started after World War II. European immigrants, particularly those from Italy and Greece, brought their love of coffee and cafes with them to their new home. This led to a number of thriving cafes in the inner city suburbs.

From the artsy, bohemian spots of the 50s to the centre of youth culture in the 90s, Melbourne’s cafe culture has continued to evolve. That’s why today, many consider it an essential part of the city itself.

What to order

Flat white

While there’s debate over who invented this drink, many claim it was perfected in Melbourne.

Similar to a latte, order an iconic flat white to enjoy steamed milk poured over espresso, with just a thin ‘flat’ layer of foam on top.

Long black/americano

Love a black coffee? You’ll rarely see it on a Melbourne menu.

Instead, order a long black or an americano, which is a blend of espresso and hot water.

Filter/batch brew

Recently, filter or batch brew coffee has been increasingly popular and is now available widely across the city.

This drip-style coffee is usually served black, but you can also order it with a dash of milk if you prefer!

Cold brew

Whether you’re hitting the books or starting your day, cold brew is your ticket to a serious energy hit.

Made by steeping coffee in cold water for about 24 hours, this smooth, delicious drink has more caffeine than espresso!

Magic

Want to feel like a real Melbournite? You probably won’t see magic coffee on a menu, but it’s the go-to order for those in the know.

It’s made from double ristretto with three-quarters milk. What does that mean? We don’t know either, but we know it’s delicious!

Mont Blanc

The latest coffee trend coming out of Melbourne is the decadent Mont Blanc, invented by local cafe Good Measure

A blend of coffee, cream, spice and citrus, this drink is part coffee, part cocktail and part dessert. What’s not to love?
