TOEFL iBT Has Been Reinstated For Australian Visa Purposes

In a significant development, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced that the TOEFL iBT test will once again be valid for Australian visa applications starting May 5, 2024.

This decision reverses last year’s announcement from the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) which, on July 26, 2023, temporarily ceased the acceptance of TOEFL iBT for visa purposes.

Following a thorough review, the DHA has confirmed that the enhanced TOEFL iBT aligns with its rigorous English proficiency standards. Responding to this approval, ETS expressed gratitude, stating,  “We appreciate the DHA’s exacting standards for English proficiency and their recognition that the TOEFL iBT upholds them.”

The TOEFL iBT is recognised globally as a premier test of academic English proficiency, accepted by over 12,500 institutions worldwide.

Some important things to note:

  • TOEFL iBT must be taken at an approved test centre, as the Australian government does not accept tests conducted online.
  • Tests administered between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, will not be accepted for visa purposes.
  • Tests taken before July 26, 2023, will remain valid.
